Best Moment *CPO initiation, Long Beach Naval Station, while "Tico" was undergoing upkeep at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard. Thanks to MMCS Tharp and his comment "Chief, you were made to wear that uniform" *Performed a "hands-on" overhaul of one deck winch hydraulic system that was supposedly "beyond ships force capabilities". Work was accomplished underway in adverse weather conditions. Made Board for E-8 due to to my successful tour aboard Tico, thanks to CWO Kadrlik.
Worst Moment Flight from Travis, to Guam, to Clark in the Philipines, to catch the "Tico" in Subic Bay. Two weeks in the Subic Transit Barracks waiting for the ship to come in. No duties, just heat and misery, before Subic was "Civilized". Than after the cruise was over, an early group was sent home to await the arrival of Tico in SDiego. We flew "space-A" and had to wait in Clark for three days for a flight home to Travis, all the while using up our leave time.

Other Memories 2nd Equator crossing 9 April 1968 while enroute Tonkin Gulf to Singapore. Hydraulics Work Center Supervisor E-6. UNREPS, and keeping the old winches running. Pilots, using the escalator as a cargo elevator. Hanger Bay roller curtains, wading up like tissue paper. "A" Gang Admin Assistant E-7. Recabling #3 deck-edge elavator in Sasebo, Japan. Typhoons - Carriers bouncing around like Tin Cans, Tin Cans nowhere in sight. "Tico" conversion from CVA to CVS in Long Beach. TRANS RTC SDiego Dec 1967. RECDUT Ticonderoga (CVA-14) Jan 1968. ---------------------------------------- USS Ticonderoga (CV/CVA/CVS-14), fourth to bear the name, was a long-hull Essex-class fleet aircraft carrier. "The Big T" served from 1944 to 1973, earning 17 Battle Stars for service during World War II and the Vietnam War. It was the first of the long-hull Essex-class carriers, distinguished from the "short-hull" versions by having a reshaped "clipper" bow. Some sources (not including the U.S. Navy) identify the "long hull" Essex ships as "Ticonderoga-class" carriers. The carrier also received three awards of the Navy Unit Commendation and the Meritorious Unit Commendation. Aug. 2, 1964 - Aircraft from USS Ticonderoga (CVA 14) drove off North Vietnamese motor torpedo boats attacking the destroyer USS Maddox, patrolling international waters in the Gulf of Tonkin. Aug. 5, 1964 - On order from President Lyndon B. Johnson, aircraft from USS Constellation (CVA 64) and USS Ticonderoga (CVA 14) attacked motor torpedo boats and their supporting facilities at five locations along the North Vietnam coast. In 64 attack sorties, these aircraft sank or seriously damaged 25 boats and destroyed a major part of their petroleum stores and storage facilities.
