Best Moment *Leaving the ship in Yokosuka at the beginning of a WestPac Cruise, to fly back to the States to begin a 3 year tour of shore duty. *1959/60 overhaul period in Portland, Or. First re-enlistment was in Portland, 1960 aboard Catamount.
Worst Moment Dodging typhoons in the Pacific, Olongapo shore patrol duties.

Other Memories *June'58 to Dec '58, first WestPac cruise. *Resupply of "DEW" line, Pt. Barrow, Alaska. *Chile Earthquake, 1960. From 26 June through 15 July 1960, USS Catamount (LSD) and an embarked boat group conducted flood-relief operations in the area of Valparaiso, Chile. *1st Equator crossing, July 1960. *1962 Operation Pony Express, Borneo. Marines kept getting their equipment stuck in the mud. *1962 Trip up the Saigon River, no one allowed on Main deck. Arrived Saigon 2 Nov, departed 6 Nov. *Flight from Tokyo to Travis, with a stopover in Alaska, the day before the big Alaskan earthquake in March 1964. ---------------------------------------- LSD 17 Catamount: Built at Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock, Co., Newport News, VA/ Commissioned: April 9, 1945/ Decommissioned: Date unknown/ Stricken: October 31, 1974/ Sold: December 4, 1975/ Price: $178,148.45/ Fate: sold for scrap to Max Rouse & Sons, Beverly Hills, Ca.
