Last Known Activity:
Not many details can be found about GM1 Fabich's Navy service. It is known that as part of Naval Combat Demolition Unit 117 (NCDU-117) he trained in England for the attack on Utah Beach. At that time, his unit became a part of Naval Combat Demolition Unit Force "U" - the "U" for Utah Beach, a coded name for a sector of the attack on Normandy. On June 6, 1944, as part of the Normandy landings, the unit came under heavy fire. GM1 Fabich was killed in action and originally buried in France. In 1948, his remains were returned to his family for burial in Minnesota. His name also appears on the National SEAL Memorial in Fort Pierce, FL.
