The USS Runner (SS-275) left on her patrol for the Kurile Islands on 27 May 1943, and was never heard from again. She may have struck an enemy mine or sunk as a result of an air/sea attack. Declared overdue and presumed lost, she was stricken from the Navy list on 30 October 1943. Fire Controlman, Second Class O'Meara was listed as Missing in Action and later declared dead 2 January 1946.
