SK1 Bailey was captured by the Japanese after the fall of Corregidor on May 6, 1942. On September 7, 1944 while being transported aboard the Japanese ship Shinyo Maru, that ship was sunk by the USS Paddle (SS-263). Bailey was among the men listed as missing in action and later declared dead.

Citation: Storekeeper First Class Vincent Leonard Bailey (NSN: 2720497), United States Navy, a former crewman of the U.S.S. CANOPUS (AS-9), was captured by the Japanese after the fall of Corregidor, Philippine Islands, on 6 May 1942, and was held as a Prisoner of War until his death while in captivity.
USS Vestal (AR-4) was a collier (or coal ship), later refitted as a fleet repair ship. The Vestal served between 1909 and 1946 in both World Wars I and II and received two battle stars for her World War II service.
