Pharmacist's Mate First Class Fred Eugene Kathan entered the U.S. Navy from California and was attached to Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. He was killed in action by bomb fragments during the Battle of Tarawa on November 21 when the LVT-1 he was aboard hit a land mine. He was buried on Betio, but after the war his remains could not be identified among those disinterred from the island. Pharmacist's Mate First Class Kathan is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
