Upon graduation from bootcamp I went straight to Steward School as Steward Apprentice(TA). Worked in the Officers' Mess aboard USS Providence (CLG-6) from 10 June 1967 to 31 January 1970.   With the help of ship's XO I was able to change rate from TN to FN.  I did that by passing the Fireman's exams. I was sent to FN Class"P" School at SSC Great Lakes on 1 February 1970 until 22 May 1970. I was designated BTFN after graduation reporting back to USS Providence to complete my sea tour but this time as BTFN checking out on 15 October 1970 for transfer to USS WORDEN (DLG-18).
