 Additional Information
Last Known Activity:

Robert Coe came from a long line of Methodist ministers. Although he was raised in the presence of so many pastors, he didn't feel pressured into joining the ministry. As with many clergymen, he felt service in the church was his life's calling. When World War II began, he joined the military, not only because of a sense of patriotism, but also because he knew there would be a great need for spiritual advisors and leaders.

Over his years as a preacher, he never thought he was very good. However, many of the men, women, and children he served would disagree.

Once he retired, he and his wife enjoyed traveling although they were restricted to the west coast because of health problems they both suffered. His hobbies included golf, photography, and reading. He also enjoyed spending as much time as possible with his children and grandchildren.

Legion of Merit
For exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service as the Base Chaplain, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, California, from 8 July 1967 to 31 October 1970. Throughout this period, Captain Coe performed his demanding duties in an exemplary and highly professional manner. With resourcefulness and skill, he directed and coordinated the myriad activities of his staff in providing the utmost in religious services and support. Captain Coe assumed his duties during a period when the increased tempo of operations created unprecedented demands for the conduct of religious services. He displayed superb leadership and sound judgment in judiciously utilizing his limited assets and worked tirelessly to accomplish the unnumerable demands placed on his section. Skillfully employing his experience and knowledge, he grasped the vital significance of problems confronting the Chaplains Predeployment School, thoroughly analyzed the various courses of action, and presented logical and timely recommendations which resolved the problems. During his tenure of duty, Captain Coe personally formulized and implemented various programs and services which were proven beneficial to the requirements of his staff and the servicemen and their dependents at Camp Pendleton. His concern and dedication in the pursuance of religion resulted in the establishment of an Easter Ecumenical Sunrise Service, which received acclaim and recognition throughout the Marine Corps, and in the formation of chaplain teams to voluntarily work in counselling sessions at the Base Correctional Center, an endeavor recognized Navy-wide with plans for similar programs at other correctional centers. His unwaivering dedication to his profession and his deep concern for the needs of others earned the respect and admiration of all who observed him and contributed immeasurably to the morale and operational effectiveness of Camp Pendleton. By his initiative, extraordinary professionalism, and selfless devotion to duty, Captain Coe rendered distinguished service to his country and thereby upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
