I spent over 25 years affiliated with the U.S. Navy or U.S. Navy Reserve. Just about half and half. I left active duty in April of 1991, one month shy of 12 years. I took the summer off and affiliated with the Reserves in Sept 91 and remained there until I retired in 2004. All in all, I had a great time. If I had to do it all over again, I would have stayed active, but live and learn, I guess. In many respects, I am still the same old Dave. But I did finally quit drinking over 22 years ago. The best decision that I ever made. It certainly cost me a lot in my active duty years and I left because I guess you could say that I was running away. Lesson learned the hard way I guess. Now I live a much slower and safer life.

Named for the Battle of Midway, USS MIDWAY was the lead ship of her class, three of which were completed, with another two ships cancelled. Serving her country for 47 years, more than 200,000 American veterans served aboard her. During that time, the USS MIDWAY saw service off Vietnam, in the Persian Gulf and in a number of other conflicts and crises. After being the first aircraft carrier forward deployed for 17 years in Yokosuka, Japan, she returned to North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego for decommissioning in April of 1992. In over five decades of service, she received the Presidential Unit Citation; Navy Unit Commendation; U.S. Navy & Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal; China Service Expeditionary Medal; and Vietnam Service Medal.
Commissioned as CVB 41, the MIDWAY was redesignated as attack aircraft carrier CVA 41 on October 1, 1952, and multi-purpose aircraft carrier CV 41 on June 30, 1975.
Today, the MIDWAY is serving as a floating museum in the city of San Diego. There are two Photo Tours of the USS MIDWAY Museum available. Click here for a Photo Tour with photos from 2007 or click here for photos from 2008 and 2010.

Best Moment The various port visits that this fine ship went to. We were a go anywhere do anything ship. The USS Midway was the true "Tip of the Sword" Just being a part of the crew of this fine ship, as someone just starting out in the Navy was a huge honor. Forward deployed in Yokosuka, Japan, this ship represented the U.S. Navy and the United States of America well.
Worst Moment Collision at sea, no fun at all July 29th 1980 is a night that I will never forget. Midway collided with the Panamanian merchant ship Cactus while transiting the passage between Palawan Island of the Philippines and the coast of Northern Borneo 450 nautical miles southwest of Subic Bay en-route to Singapore. While Midway sustained no serious damage, two sailors working in the liquid oxygen plant were killed, three were injured, and three F-4 Phantom aircraft parked on the flight deck were damaged. But once it happened I will tell you what. We went to GQ and had Zebra set within 4 minutes. Thats right on a carrier we were set within 4 minutes. Midway Magic at its best.

Other Memories This is a listing of the cruises that the Midway participated in while I was on board. Of note, I was not on the first cruise listed below, because I was in transit and reported to the ship in Feb 80. This does not include the many trips the ship did to an operational area off the coast of Okinawa for approximately 10-14 days at a time. It does not include a trip to Pusan, Korea, in Nov of 81 either. We were one sea going ship. But what can I say, I love that old gray lady.
