It is possible that John Daniel Casale had enlisted in the Army prior to his service in the Navy.
Records refer to his rank of Private and advancement to Corporal.
Time in Service to receive a Good Conduct Medal would have been more than 2 years.
Also, his Service Number 6427127 may pre-date his enlistment in the Navy of August 17, 1942, although Army and Navy Service Numbering systems were not the same.
.................................
John Daniel Casale was killed when the Miantonomah was struck by a mine and sank. He was an Electrician's Mate 3rd/class.
He rose from the rank of private to that of corporal. He was awarded a good conduct medal, a purple heart, and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign medals.
He was probably in the engine room or below deck and therefore couldn't save himself or be saved. He was a hard working man from and Italian immigrant family. He worked hard throughout his life and made the ultimate sacrifice. He has no descendants. He wasn't married & his sister Mary was the only sibling to marry. She didn't have any children either. Her late husband had nieces and nephews many of whom are dead. The next generation don't know John Casale and have no connection.
