HOPPER WINSTON-SALEM - Gordon Lewis Hopper, 89, of Winston-Salem passed away on Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative Care Center. Gordon was born on October 22, 1921 in Effingham, IL, to the late Rev. Lewis D. and Barbara Hopper. Gordon is survived by his children: Julia Pritchett of Tucson, AZ, Catherine Duncan of Helena, MT, Barbara Carr of Winston-Salem, NC, and Mary Vanderlinden of Reidsville, NC; and by his grandchildren: Ellie Lansman, Stacey Johnson, Cressy Bedolla, Brian Vaughn, Leanna Vaughn, and Anthony Gogel. Gordon is also survived by his brother Rev. William Hopper of Honolulu, HI. He is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy M. Hopper, and children, Laura Ellen Hopper and James Gordon Hopper. Gordon was a proud World War II veteran. He served our country aboard the submarine, U.S.S. Pampanito. During his professional career, he worked as a speechwriter for Adlai Stevenson, former Governor of Illinois and candidate for president. He was also involved with agencies dedicated to the revival and development of downtown St. Louis, MO, and Colorado Springs, CO. His last place of employment was Batz Hodgson Neuwoehner, a public relations and advertising firm located in St. Louis, MO. Gordon loved to cycle, often riding more than 100 miles a week. He loved to cook, enjoyed the Southwest, and was a scholar of President Abraham Lincoln. A Memorial Service will he held to celebrate the life of Gordon Hopper on Monday, March 7, at 3 p.m. at the Olivet Moravian Church, 2205 Olivet Church Road, Winston Salem, NC, 27106.
