Navy Cross Awarded for actions during World War II
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Commander Lincoln Marcy, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession as Executive Officer of the U.S.S. RONQUIL (SS-369), on 17 November 1944 during the SECOND War Patrol of that submarine in enemy waters. When the pressure hull of his vessel was severely damaged by enemy gunfire during an engagement on 17 November 1944, Lieutenant Commander Marcy voluntarily entered the superstructure to effect vitally-needed repairs, despite heavy enemy gunfire and extremely rough seas. Fully aware that he would be abandoned should the submarine be forced to dive, he resolutely completed his hazardous task and undoubtedly prevented the loss of the vessel as an enemy attack forced it to submerge less than an hour later. By his professional skill, courage and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Commander Marcy upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Lieutenant Lincoln Marcy, USN, Shrewsbury, Mass: During night action on a submarine patrol, Lieutenant Marcy, as torpedo officer, rendered valuable assistance in sinking a hostile destroyer.

Lincoln Marcy, 89, of Newport Beach, Calif., died February 18, 2006. Ret. Commander Marcy lived in Norwich from 1960 until 1989. A 1939 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Commander Marcy served ten war patrols in submarines during World War II: on the USS Searaven, USS Ronquil as chief executive officer and aboard the USS Sailfish as skipper. He was awarded the Navy Cross for bravery during the war. In the citation for the Navy Cross, Admiral C. W. Nimitz wrote that on November 17th of 1944 when his submarine received "two hits through the pressure hull...with complete disregard for personal safety, he volunteered to perform the repair. . . Despite enemy gunfire and heavy seas, and knowing he would be abandoned should his ship be forced to dive, he skillfully accomplished this difficult task...His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Navy."
After Commander Marcy retired from the Navy he and his family resided in Norwich. He taught mathematics in the public school system in Norwich and in Ledyard. He spent his years in Norwich raising his family and restoring a 1742 colonial home. He became an expert in collecting and in restoring early American furniture. He also loved gardening and carpentry.
He is survived by Michael Marcy, Mark Marcy, and Martha Marcy Topik; five granddaughters, Elizabeth Barile, Katrina Marcy, Lydia Marcy, Julia Topik, and Natalia Topik; and a great-granddaughter, Isabella Marcy. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia Marcy, who died in 1986 and his eldest son, William Lincoln Marcy, a ranger with the 101st Airborne, died in combat in 1969.

USN BIOGRAPHY OF COMMANDER LINCOLN MARCY, USN
Lincoln Marcy was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on 29 February 1916. He attended Norwich University in Vermont, and on 2 June 1939 graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy as on Ensign. For one and a half years following his graduation, CDR Marcy served in the light cruiser PHILADELPHIA. In April 1941 he entered Submarine School in Connecticut and, upon graduation in June of that year, reported to the USS SEA RAVEN in the Asiatic Fleet. CDR Marcy served in the SEA RAVEN during her first six war patrols, and was then ordered to the USS RONQUIL as Executive Officer. In December of 1944 he reported to the USS SAILFISH as Commanding Officer, serving therein until the end of the war. Since the war CDR Marcy has performed such duties as Aide to the Chief of Naval Personnel, CO of the USS CORSAIR, Head of the Enlisted Discharge Section of BuPers, Staff of Admiral (Earl of Mountbotten of Burma), Executive Officer of the USS SAINT PAUL, and Head of Policy Control Branch, BuPers. For his wartime service, CDR Marcy wears the Navy Cross, Navy & Marine Corps Medal and the Bronze Star with combat "V".
