Virginia Beach - CDR Perry Franklin Creighton, Jr., USN., Ret., passed away on December 14, 2012.

CDR Creighton enlisted in the Navy June 1941. His career from Apprentice Seaman spanned the normal path of advancement through the ranks of Chief Quartermaster, Chief Warrant Boatswain and Ensign to Commander. He served during all of World War II in the South Pacific and Asiatic areas on several ships. He participated in the sweep across the Pacific and the battles at Saipan, Tinian, Guam, Peliliu, Anguar and Okinawa plus support operations at Midway, the Marshall Islands and the New Hebrides.

After World War II he served on the U.S.S. Maury (AGS 16) in the yearlong hydrographic survey of Truk, Caroline Islands in the Western Pacific and the yearlong hydrographic survey of the Persian Gulf in 1948-1949.

CDR Creighton's career included thirteen ships and over twenty years sea duty. He was the Commanding Officer of a Naval Research Ship, U.S.S. Hunting (EAG 398), a radar picket ship, U.S.S. Interdictor (AGR 13) and a salvage ship, U.S.S. Preserver (ARS 8). With over twenty nine years of service he retired from the staff of Commander Service Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. He was a Golden Life Member of the U.S. Naval Institute and a member of the Retired Officers Association and local Hampton Roads Chapter of TROA, the Navy Mustang Association and the Military Officers Association of America.

His father Captain Perry F. Creighton, Master Mariner was lost at sea during World War II when his ship S.S. Onondaga was torpedoed by a German submarine. His brother Donald S. Creighton, Seaman First Class, USN a member of the armed guard on the ship S.S. Pan Pennsylvania was also lost at sea when the ship was torpedoed by a German submarine during World War II. 

CDR. Creighton was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Costello Creighton, his mother Mabel Creighton Spruill and a brother David S. Creighton who also served in the Army during the Korean War.

Survivors include three children Perry F. Creighton, III, Nancy Creighton Salch and husband Thomas and Teresa Hobson; five grandchildren Brett Thomas Salch and wife Tara, Tiffany Codjoe and husband Rod, Kelly Jean Russell and husband Kris, Cory Hobson and Justin Hobson; four great grandchildren, Mya Salch, Regan Codjoe, Greyson Codjoe and Braeden Hobson and a sister Doris Wolfe Harlan and husband Ken.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home where a celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow with full military honors at Rosewood Memorial Park.
