Hannum, David Lawrence, PO2

David Lawrence Hannum, 87, a 26 year resident of the Annapolis area, died at the Baltimore Washington Medical Center after a series of hospitalizations during the months of October and November.

David was born April 22, 1925 in Cleveland. He entered the United States Navy in April 1943. After completing submarine school in Groton, CT he served in the Pacific Theater during WWII on the USS Perch, SS-313, completing two war patrols and was honorably discharged from the Navy in August 1946 attaining the rank of Motor Machinist Second Class (MoMM2).

After the war he completed high school, married his childhood sweetheart Jane Marguerite Fritz and moved to Decatur, GA where he worked as General Manager and President for the National Solvent Corporation of GA. During this period his children Timothy and Douglas were born. Moving to Atlanta, he graduated from Georgia State College and the Atlanta Law School attending school mostly during the evening while working for CT Corporation System during the day. At CT he held a variety of senior management positions in areas from general business administration to data processing and systems analysis applications for law office time accounting systems and services. His work with CT Corporation System took him to Chicago, IL and the family to Glen Ellyn, IL in 1960 where Timothy completed high school. In 1967 he made the move to CT corporate headquarters In New York City, NY and the family moved to Darien, CT where Douglas completed high school. He ultimately retired in 1986 after having served as President, Trademark Service Corporation, a subsidiary of CT Corporation System, where he brought cutting edge mainframe computing capability to bear in trademark search services for trademark attorneys worldwide.

Retirement, boating on the Chesapeake and Severn, and the birth of his first granddaughter, Katherine in 1986 and second granddaughter Emily, in 1987 brought him to the Annapolis area where he lived in The Downs until after the death of Jane in 2001. A rough year medically in 2004 led to his final move to Millersville, MD where he lived with his son Douglas, daughter-in-law Debby, their daughter Katherine, her husband Greg and their two dogs Jazz and Lola. He was always very attached to Douglas' beagle Maggie who died shortly after the move to Millersville. Diana, a rescue Beagle (in more ways than one) arrived in 2007 and being unusually calm and quiet for a beagle, spent the majority of her day in his lap whenever it was available.

He shared his passion for boating with his wife and was a member of the U.S. Power Squadrons for 35 years. He loved all things Navy and was a founding member of the Naval Academy Parents Club of Connecticut, Secretary for the Annapolis Council-Navy League of the United States, member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans of WWII, the Naval Submarine League, U.S. Submarine Veterans, Inc. and the Fleet Reserve Association. His last major road trip occurred during the first weekend in October where he attended the reunion of his submarine the USS Perch in Grand Rapids, MI. He was the only WWII vet in attendance. He followed Navy sports, especially football closely attending most home games as a season ticket holder until 2010 and attending several Army-Navy Games and even a bowl game in Charlotte in 2006. He was a member of NAAA and he frequently attended the Navy Quarterback club luncheons. He was a volunteer and advisor the U.S. Naval Academy Sailing Squadron on all things diesel where he applied his submarine Motor Machinist skills to the maintenance of the sailing fleet's diesel engines. He was a member of the Naval Academy Club of New York, the New York Yacht Club and The International Club of Annapolis.

In his later years he rekindled a life-long interest in military weaponry and became an avid collector of military side and shoulder arms. He shared his passion for lunch with his fellow members of The Lost Patrol and his passion for sea stories, guns and all things military as a member and past President of the New Providence Club.

He was a Mason for over 60 years beginning with the Pythagoras Lodge #41 of GA in 1949 and he was a long-time member of Annapolis Lodge #89.

Inurnment will be in the Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium where he will join Jane sometime early next year.

Qualified in submarines on the USS Perch (SS-313) in 1945 and was a MOMM2(SS) when he left the Navy.
