Best Friends CTI2 (AW) David Meadows (later Captain, USN)
Best Moment Having the BAINBRIDGE CO send a runner down to the Quic Van, to ask if it would be OK if the ship had a cookout on the fantail that day. (We had been providing weather data for the ship.) From then on (the answer was a qualified "Yes" as thunderstorms were anticipated late in the afternoon. From then on I got head of the line privileges and the crew would back down ladders when I needed to go topside. CTI2 Meadows had spread the word that I was a CIA agent. When heading down the ladder to the first class mess as the crew was awaiting the daily movie, and the CO had just started up the ladder, he said "Come on down! You are probably doing something more important than I am" He then turned around and descended to the mess decks as I came down the ladder. From then on my "reputation" was cemented and everyone was deferential. I did not understand how the gossip/rumors and "evidence" led to my treatment into years afterward when then Captain Meadows (noted author) filled me in.
Chain of Command LT (later Captain) Glenn Bartholemew), CTF-76, CPF (CDR Bill Shermer)
Other Memories DLGN-25 was redesignated CGN-25 when it became a flagship for a surface action group and embarked a small SAG staff led by Captain (later RADM) Paul Roane who spent much time in QV3 as BAINBRIDGE had no dedicated flag spaces. We received many tasks from CPF which were normally not given to a small DSE or even a SAG staff. This was another trip where everyone in the DSE re-enlisted or extended on ACDU. On return to San Miguel, and putting together other DSE teams, I had a hard time finding volunteers...as the attitude changes by sailors for whom I was the LPO resulted in their re-enlisting or extending...no matter how anxious they were to leave the Navy beforehand. The term "shanghai'd" came into use as I "selected" volunteers. Mission focus with "kindness" and my responsibilities for DSE team members success were practices and lessons for ALCON.
