Belong to a civic organization Optimist International and before I left it I was a Governor of South Central District.
At the present time I am semi-retired awaiting on approval from VA for my disabilities. I have been already been declared 30% disabled in my right arm with parkinson disease.
Best Moment Liberty in Hong Kong, and becoming a qualified boat coxwains. Moving the 1st Marine Corps back to US since they had not been back to the states since the WWII. Five trips back and forth.
Worst Moment When one of our shipsmate got killed when he was loading a twin 40 and the gun control went out of control
Chain of Command Commander Amphibious Forces, Pacific Fleet
Other Memories When we moved over 5000 Chinese people and animals off the isalnd called the Tachien Islands on the coast of China and transported them to Taipai and have trouble with the government their as to who was going unable as to was going to off load them off the ship. Off course the local government won but we had to watch them like hawks to insure they would not steall anything. When we attempted to enter the San Diego Harbor the Department of Heath wouild not let us in until we wash the hole ship down to pass health inspection from top to bottom. It tooks 4 days to wash the whole ship down working around 18 hours a day. There sures was a lot of wives mad when we finally arrived in the harbor, however we had to tie up in the stream and had liberty boats to take the liberty party ashore. Myself I didnt care on way or other I was still single and the only thing I wanted was a cold one. Also we had a another shipmate by the name of Moises Whitehorse who was a full French Candian Indian from either Wyo. or Mont. When he got drunk and come back to the ship,he would go down and get his chief head dress and rubber tomahaw and go up to chase the OOD around the ship would always be the young Ensign. The old man called Whitehores up to his cabain and he had to surrender his battle gear until we both transferred to Pre-Commissed School at Naval Station, San Diego to be transferred to the USS FDR 42 in Brementon, Washington and we had to train young seaman how to operate a liberty boat and both of us just knew had to operate LCVP's and LCM's 6s. What a time that was.
