Captain Gill was born in Junction City, Kansas and entered the Naval Academy in 1903. In 1911 he was appointed as aide to Staff Commander, First Division, Atlantic Fleet and beginning in 1916 served as gunnery officer on USS Seattle and Oklahoma. He was later executive officer of USS George Washington, and navigator on the battleship Pennsylvania. He commanded USS Antares, Vestel, and Astoria before becoming Professor of Naval Science and Tactics at Yale University. Captain Gill died on 9 January 1948.
