Last Known Activity:

US Navy Admiral. Born in Delia, Texas, he entered the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland in 1915 and graduated in June 1919. He was involved in the construction of the submarine base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in the early 1920s. Later in the 1920s, he served in the battleships USS Arkansas and New York, and was an instructor at the Naval Academy. Afterwards, he commanded the submarines R-17, L-8, R-13, and S-9. In the 1930s he commanded the submarine S-44, served at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, and commanded the new submarine Porpoise, was damage control officer in the heavy cruiser USS Portland, and was a submarine detailer in the Bureau of Navigation at Washington DC. In October 1941 he served as Commander Submarine Division 15 in Manila, Philippines, which was the home of the Asiatic Fleet. After the Japanese attacked the Philippines in December 1941 he relocated into the tunnels of Corregidor with the top staff of Command Submarine Asia. As the defeat became evident, he was ordered to retreat and on January 1, 1942 he boarded the submarine USS Swordfish to Surabaya, Indonesia and from there he was ordered to Fremantle, Australia. In 1943 he became chief of staff to Charles Lockwood, Commander Submarine Force Pacific Fleet. In 1944 he returned to the US and became the Commandant of the US Naval Academy. In the spring of 1945 he took command of the battleship USS Missouri, the flagship of Admiral William Halsey, Commander Third Fleet and after participating in the bombardments against Honshu, Hokkaido, and Okinawa, he was responsible for preparing the ship to accept the Japanese surrender of World War II on September 2, 1945. In November 1945 he was promoted to the rank of rear admiral and became the Commander Seventh Fleet for duty with the survey for forming the U.S. Advisory Group to China. From 1948 to 1948 he was assigned to the Pearl Harbor Naval Base, from 1949 to 1950 he served as Commander Amphibious Training Command Atlantic Fleet, from 1950 to 1952, Commander Submarine Force Atlantic Fleet, from 1952 to 1954 he was Commandant of the 14th Naval District in Hawaii, and from 1954 to 1956 he became the Naval Inspector General at Washington DC at the rank of vice admiral. He retired from active duty in 1956 with 37 years of continuous military service. After his retirement, he worked as a consultant for the Rand Corporation. In 1974 he published his book, "The Reminiscences of Admiral Stuart S. Murray." He died at the age of 82.
