Rear Admiral Read was the Commanding Officer of NC-4. NC-4 was a Navy Curtiss flying boat, and was the first airplane to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in May 1919.

He was also awarded the Royal Air Force Cross.

Armor, 11" Belt, 12" Turrets, 3" Decks, 11 1/2" Conning Tower. Machinery, 25,000 SHP; vertical, triple expansion engines, 2 screws. Speed, 21 Knots, Crew 933. Operational and Building Data: Laid down by Newport News, Shipbuilding, Newport News, VA., November 11, 1907. Launched February 6, 1909. Commissioned April 4, 1910. Decommissioned November 10, 1923. Stricken November 10, 1923. Fate: Broken up for scrap at the Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard during 1924.
