As a Commander, Richard Cruz took part in Admiral Byrd's expedition to Antarctica. He returned to that area again as a Rear Admiral in charge of Operation High Jump.

Fate: Sold to Greece, July 30, 1914 & renamed Lemmos. Sunk by German bombers while moored in Salamis near Athens on April 10, 1941.
