Navy Cross Awarded for actions during World War I
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander Samuel Wood Bryant, United States Navy, for distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. ALLEN, engaged in the important, exacting and hazardous duty of patrolling the waters infested with enemy submarines and mines, in escorting and protecting vitally important convoys of troops and supplies through these waters, and in offensive and defensive action, vigorously and unremittingly prosecuted against all forms of enemy naval activity during World War I.

Other Memories Hospitalized for more than a year, he was discharged from the Naval Hospital, San Diego, on December 15, 1936 and, on March 1, 1937, was transferred to the retired list by reason of physical disability. Rear Admiral Bryant died in Asheville, North Carolina on November 4, 1938, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery on November 7, 1938.
