Navy Cross
Awarded for actions during the Second Nicaraguan Campaign (Spring 1927)
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Navy Cross to Captain John Drayton Wainwright, United States Navy, for distinguished service to the Government of the United States in a duty of responsibility as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. CLEVELAND, in Nicaraguan Waters in the Spring of 1927, Nicaragua then being in a state of insurrection. Largely through his good judgment, tact, patience and ability, good order was maintained and disarmament accomplished in districts ashore assigned to his command without friction and without bloodshed.
