Memories For This Unit

Best Friends
Most of my guys in R Division were good people. Thank you all for your hard work.

MMC Steve Stokes and QMC Rick Beckner- I always enjoyed talking to you guys as well.

Best Moment
The decomissioning ceremony. Because of a variety of issues, USS Pigeon was of very limited value to the taxpayers. She was an interesting assignment, but she really needed to go!

We took a trip out to Catalina Island one time. It was my first time there and I had a good time. I don't remember ever going anywhere else except back to the Long Beach shipyard for a while.

Worst Moment
I don't know if it was a submarine community thing or what, but on Pigeon it seemed like most things were much more difficult than they needed to be.

Other Memories
Salvaging a downed CH-46 helicopter off the coast near Santa Barbara and recovering the body of the young Marine who was stiil aboard. It was the one moment we got to shine during my two year assignment.

We had a very good crew, but there was a high level of frustration because the ship could not be certified to do her job. We mostly just sat around taking up pier space in San Diego.
