Best Moment International Jazz Festival in Tangier. We rented a camper from Special Services, drove up and camped out on the beach for 3 days.
Worst Moment Missing the E5 exam because I was too hung over. I received my first and last A--chewing from my chief (can't remember his name). That moment is what set me on the straight and narrow. I never took my responsibility to myself for granted again. An equally bad moment was when my extension request returned disapproved.
Chain of Command CYN3 (don't remember his name) trained me when I first arrived. Sharp guy. I learned a lot from him. Impeccable character and work ethic. My watch supervisor, RM1 Barney Nosbitch, was a real straight shooter. A white guy who truly didn't care about race, creed or color. Treated us all equally, black, white or otherwise. Worked hard, played hard. He took me to the Credit Union and co-signed a $1K loan for me so I could get married when I got back home. I never did get a chance to thank him properly. There was a Warrant Officer and a Chief, but we rarely saw them because we were watch standers on constant rotation.
Other Memories Inaugural flight from JFK to Casablanca onboard a Delta Airlines DC-9. All the booze and champaign was on the house. Arriving in Casablanca and seeing my first real case of elephantitus (shocker). New Years Eve 1972 on the train to Casablanca, drinking mint tea and partying with the locals. Caravans to Media Beach. The Double Blue Doors (If you know, you know). Getting my first apartment "in town" and having a Fatima, her name was Mina, who cooked and cleaned for me (I was 18 years old) for $15 a month. Her Cous Cous and Chicken tagine was to die for.
