Died in an Operational Accident on September 23, 1987.

Cdr. Sledge was CO of VA-52 flying off of the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70).  His plane, A-6 Intruder had mechanical failure and Cdr. Sledge crashed in the Pacific Ocean.   His body was never recovered, nor was any wreckage found.

Lt.jg Morrison, flying with Cdr. Sledge, ejected safely from the aircraft and survived.

Cdr. Sledge was survived by his wife Betty Jowers Sledge.
