Downed five (5) Japanese planes while serving with AVG (Flying Tigers) in Burma and China, qualifying him as an "ace."
Forced to bail out from his damaged plane after a raid on Lao Kai, French Indochina on 17 May 1942. Captured by Vichy French and handed to Japanese military police (Kempetai). Held in Shanghai in brutal conditions for almost a year, almost dying from starvation, torture and disease.
Transferred to Kiangwan POW camp. Escaped from prison train with four Marines. For forty days they traveled 2,000 miles overland, reaching Allied lines on 30 June 1945.
After the war, Cdr. Bishop suffered from severe PTSD related to his time as a POW. He was medically retired from the Navy in 1948.
