Other Memories First and only CO of VF(N)-106 (Night Fighting 106) flying radar-equipped Grumman F6F-3N Hellcat. Upon arrival at Night Air Combat Training Unit Pacific (NACTU PAC) Barbers Point, VF(N)-106, along with several other night fighter squadrons, was disestablished as VF(N) was reorganized in 1944. Athough deprived of his squadron command, LCDR Smith was later reassigned as CO of VF-19 and had several more command opportunities during a distinguished career.
