In July 1942 Bass became a fighter pilot and was assigned to VF-29, of which he eventually became commander, on board USS Santee (CVE-29). The USS Santee was in the Atlantic Ocean when Bass arrived but eventually was sent to the Pacific theater of operations. He transferred from the USS Santee and VF-29 in April 1944. Bass was awarded his Silver Star and Air Medal during his time on board the USS Santee.
