This is our ship at iwo jima taking the first wave of tanks and marines in the beach.
They knocked a hole in the side of our ship and knocked out our port engine .
I was up on the 40 mm gun , they missed me by 6 inches.
That is the hill in the background where they put up the flag for that popular picture .
