REAR ADMIRAL RALPH E. FAUCETT, MEDICAL CORPS , U. S. NAVY: Ralph Eugene Faucett was born in Milton, Indiana, on July 28, 1916, son of Clerk W, and Iva Mabel ( Bertsch) Faucett. He attended Indiana University, Indianapolis (Bachelor of Science, 1938) and Earlham College, Eariham, Indiana (Bachelor of Arts, 1939), and returned to Indiana University, from which he was graduated with the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1942 . He was commissioned Lieutenant (junior grade) in the Medical Corps of the U. S. Navy on January 16, 1943, and subsequently advanced in rank to that of Rear Admiral, to date from August 1, 1968. After graduation from Indiana University School of Medicine on December 20, 1942, and his acceptance of a commission in the Navy Medical Corps, he interned at the U. S. Naval Hospital, Great lakes, Illinois, until January 1944. He was then assigned as Senior Medical Officer of the Navy V 12 unit at the University of Oklahoma at Norman. During March and April l944 he served as Assistant Medical Officer at the U, S. Naval Training Center, Farragut, Idaho and in June of that year completed instruction at the Field Medical School at Camp Joseph Pendleton, Oceanside, California. As Battalion Surgeon, FIRST Battlion, TENTH Marines, SECOND Marine Division he participated in the Marianas Islands and Okinawa Gunto Campaigns and in that capacity served with Occupation Forces at Nagasaki, Japan, September-November 1945. Upon his return to the United States, he reported in January 1946 for residency training in internal medicine at the U. S, Naval Hospital, San Diego, California and from September 1947 to May 1948 had postgraduate training in internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Medicine. In June 1948 he returned to the Naval Hospital, San Diego, to serve as Chief of Medical Service, Senior Officers Quarters. In March 1949 he reported to the USS NEREUS (AS-I7) and served as Senior Medical Officer on board that submarine tender until February 1950. He way them designated Medical Officer for Submarine Squadron FIVE with additional duty In the USS NEREUS, From October to December 1951 he attended the Medical Course at the Deep Sea Divers School, Naval Gun Factory Washington, D. C., after which he was a student at the U. S. Naval Submarine Base (Officers Submarine Course), New London, Connecticut. Assigned in June 1952 to the Naval Medical Research Laboratory, New London, he served as Head, Submarine Medicine Training and Assistant to the Chief of the Personnel Assessment Division, until October 1953. During that time he qualified as Submarine Medical Officer on December 22, 1952 and was Officer in Charge of the Participating Group, Operation HIDEOUT (habitability study). R. Adm. R. E. From October 1953 until November 1955 he was Squadron Medical Officer on the Staff of the Commander Submarine Squadron FIVE, and in October 1955 reported as Chief of Female Medical Service at the Naval Hospital, San Diego and Director of Internal Medicine Residency Training Program, He served in that capacity until May 1959, then had duty as Staff Medical Officer on the Staff of the Commander Submarine Force, Atlantic Fleet. In July 1962 he became Chief of Medicine and Director of Interns at the U. S. Naval Hospital, Yokosuka, Japan, and also served as Physician to the U. S. Ambassador to Japan and members of the U, S. Embassy, Japan. In October 1965 he reported as Executive Officer of the Naval Hospital, St. Albans, Long Island, New York and in November 1967 assumed command of that Hospital. He also served an additional duty assignment as Third Naval District Medical Officer. In January 1969 me was designated Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery for Research and Military Medical Specialities, Navy Department. Rear Admiral Faucett is entitled to the Ribbon for the Presidential Unit Citation with two stars, awarded the SECOND Marine Division for heroic service in the Pacific Area in November I943, In addition, he has the American Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three operation stars; World War II Victory Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal, Asia Clasp; and the National Defense Service Meal with bronze star. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association, Indiana State Medical Society, Phi Chi (Professional Medical Society), and Theta Chi (Social) Fraternity. Dr. Faucett's wife is the former Elizabeth C. Carpenter of Perrysville, Indiana. Their official residence is Box 41, Perrysville, Indiana.
