Admiral Mockrish began his career in the Navy in 1915 and served on the USS Montana, USS Arizona and WWI convoy duty on board the USS St. Louis as coxswain and gun captain. Between the wars he became a Merchant Mariner serving with several American freight and passenger lines including the United States Line. By 1928 he was First Officer, then Chief Officer and held a Master Mariner's Certificate.
