Air Medal, with combat "V".
During the Korean War, he flew combat cargo missions out of Japan. On one such mission at the Chosin Reservoir in Korea, with the presence of enemy aircraft, friendly planes making airdrops, a cratered 2500 foot dirt runway, and a crashed C-47 taking up a quarter of the runway, Chuck was able to take off with his R5D fully loaded with badly wounded and frost-bitten Marines. He was awarded the Air Medal for this daring rescue.
