STONE Rear Admiral (retired) Frank Bradford Stone died at his home in Orange Park, FL on January 27, 2011. He was born July 12, 1915 in Bloomfield, NJ and graduated from Ursinus College, (BA), Ohio State University (MS) and the Naval War College. He joined the Naval Reserve as an aviation cadet in July 1940 and was commissioned in February of 1941. After tours as flight instructor at Pensacola and Jacksonville, he served aboard the carriers Princeton and Randolph as Landing Signal Officer. Postwar assignments included tours at NAS Jacksonville as commander of Attack Squadron 85; BuPers, Head, Enlisted School Assignments, and Lieutenant Commander Detailer; aboard the carrier Randolph; staff duty with Commander, Fleet Air Jacksonville, and with the Plans and Policy Directorate, Joint Staff, Joint Chiefs of Staffs. He commanded the oiler Chemung and won the Legion of Merit with combat V as commander of the carrier Hancock in operations off Viet Nam. He was selected for flag rank in 1966 while Chief of Staff, Carrier Division 2. He was then Commander, Iceland Defense Force. His final assignment was as Commander, Carrier Division 14 with the Wasp as his flagship. Admiral Stone was married to the former Francis E. Morrow of Jacksonville, who died in 1984. They had two sons, David M. Stone and Sam R. Stone, both currently residing in Orange Park, FL. A surviving younger sister, Priscilla Stone Kay-Houston, resides in Agawam, Massachusetts. A memorial service for Admiral Stone will be held at chapel of the Naval Air Station Jacksonville at 1400 on 25 February, 2011. Admiral Stone's remains will be interred with those of his late wife in a private service at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Jacksonville.
