Captain James R. Compton, U.S. Navy, was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated with the class of 1934. He was designated a Naval Aviator in July 1937 and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Air Medals during WWII with Patrol Bombing Squadron VP-81 and VP-115. He commanded the USS Thetis Bay (CVHA-1) the USS Bennington (CV-20) and the Naval Air Station at Jacksonville Florida (1961-1964).
