USN Sailmaker's Mate Petty Officer Second Class
The Sailmaker's Mate existed from 1885 through 1939. It was the only US Navy rating that did not advance to Chief Petty Officer but ended at Petty Officer 1st Class. Strangely enough Warrant Officers existed. This specimen has blue applied felt chevrons on white in the scarce right arm eagle style of 1905. Blue Felt Chevrons on white were introduced in 1913 to replace Scarlet Chevrons and were phased out circa 1927 in favor of blue twill chevrons. On this rating badge the eagle and device are a blue/indigo color.
