During training at Bremerton,Washington. Paul Anderson joined the Navy the day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941. This service photo of Paul (known to fella sailors as "Andy") is at a Naval training station at Bremerton, Washington in 1942. Paul was later assigned as a Medical Corpsman on the home front. Paul did not like this job duty. He wanted to be assigned to a ship. So Paul decided to go AWOL for awhile and returned to base the day before being declared a deserter. He got what he wanted and was assigned as a Boatswain mate on the USS Chenango CVE-28 escort carrier. Paul stayed on the same ship until discharged as Chief Petty Officer Oct of 1945. He declined a commission for officers training. World War II was over and he retired from the Navy.
