Evidently, Aldo served in the Merchant Marines prior to joining the Navy. This is definitely not Regular Navy, but looks like it might be a "below decks" crew on an old pre WWII or WWII Navy MSTS Ship The guy in khaki is probably either the Chief Engineer or 1st Asst Engineer. The insignia on his hat is a Merchant Marine Insignia. During those days many young men joined the Merchant Marines at age 15 and then entered the Navy later on during WWII.
