COMSUBLANT

from  1960-1964, Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic (COMSUBLANT), Commander, Submarine Force (COMNAVSUBFOR)  album
November 14, 1962 will probably be a most memorable day for James Allen Burden. Standing stiffly at attention in ranks with his fellow shipmates aboard the USS Chopper (SS-342) he hoped that he had prepared adequately enough for today's inspection. Getting ready for a Captains' Inspection was trying enough indeed, but today, Vice-Admiral E.W. Grenfell, Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet would be the inspecting officer. As Admiral Grenfell passed slowly down the straight lines of submarine sailors, he stopped in front of James Burden. With a serious and critical eye he inspected Burden. Suddenly with a broad pleasant smile Admiral Grenfell extended his hand saying "Congratulations Burden, your commanding officer Tel's me you have just been promoted to second class electricians mate. When are you going to sew on another chevron?" Burden replied with visible surprise and relief, "Tomorrow night at midnight, Sir", drawing a hearty laugh from the Admiral
