Developed as a floatplane version of the famous JN-4B trainer, the Curtiss N-9 was the standard naval trainer in WWI. 560 N9's were built during the Great War, initially powered by an OXX-6 engine, later replaced by the more powerful and reliable 150-hp Hispano-Suiza model A, license-built in the US by the Wright-Martin Company. Only about 100 machines were built by Curtiss, the remaining was produced under license by Burgess Co. of Marbleheas, MA (like the one in the picture.) The N-9 remained in service until 1924.
