Target ship. I earned my "Grand Exalted Order of Bomb Duckers" certificate while on the Utah.
The Utah was the first radio controlled ship in the Navy. During bomb practice the crew would leave the ship and the Utah was run by radio from another ship. This was amazing for the thirties. The entire Battleship, boilers, throttles, pumps steering were all by radio control.
Pop was a Bosun on the Utah and was Helmsman by Captains choice when they transversed the Panama Canal. Pop always ran the Captain's gig.
Pop told me that once a practice bomb pierced through the extra wood deck, through the deck then passed through the Captains clothes locker taking all of the Captains clothing into the bilge.
