The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Ensign William Rees Lloyd, United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism in action against enemy Japanese forces during the final Japanese assault on Corregidor, Philippine Islands, on 5 & 6 May 1942. Constantly exposed to the enemy's long-range shellfire and bombings during the siege of Corregidor, Ensign Lloyd consistently disregarded all personal danger as he directed his men with unfaltering skill and ingenuity in the defense of his assigned beach area. Tenaciously holding his ground in the final assault of Corregidor's beaches on 5 May, he boldly defied the increasing fury of Japanese rifle and machine gun fire in a desperate effort to turn back the invading forces, repeatedly countering the enemy's landing attempts until struck down and instantly killed during the bitter action. A fearless leader, Ensign Lloyd rendered valiant service during this historic engagement, and his personal courage, determination and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of savage opposition reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
