He was blown off a ship into the sea off Dakar. He was awarded the Silver and Bronze Stars for rescuing two shipmates and assisting the ship's doctor in amputating arms and legs of his comrades under direction of the wounded doctor. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert G. Suggett of 233 West Main street. Robert Jr. was wounded in 'the Mediterranean area in July, 1943, during the landing operations.

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Robert Suttett was on a Goodwill Tour in Shanghai aboard the USS Sims. Because he had been trained as a gunner's mate, Suggett was transferred aboard the merchant Marine ship, the USS Saint Theressa*, which had been commandeered by the government to provide a service called the Armed Guard. (*.. USS Santa Teresa (ID # 3804), 1918-1919. Served as USS Kent (AP-28), 1941-1942, and as the U.S. Army Transport and U.S. Army Hospital Ship Ernest Hinds).
