Winning Hearts championship on my second patrol. Bluenose ceremonies after I ditched the "Royal Cookies" in the GDU. I had the RO watch and they sent back a relief for me and an escort to rtake me to the mess hall. But I eluded him when he stopped to talk to the Missile compartment watch and I then hid outboard of the aft Port A/C fan in the Middle Level Missile Compartment for over 2 hours while they all searched for me. My induction ceremony was very special. It took me days to get out all of the goop they poured on my head and rubbed into my hair.
Worst Moment
When "Battle Stations Missile" was sounded at 0100 after the XO made a 1MC announcement at 2300 the "President Kennedy had been shot and we didn't know by whom or the extent of his injuries and we would be told whenever any further info became available". WE ALL THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO NUCLEAR WAR AND WERE SHOOTING BACK TO DESTROY WHO SHOT HIM. We had those thoughts until we bypassed the 1st missile in the firing sequence and realized it was due to a "Test Message". My family only lived 1 mile away from the Sub Base in Groton, CT and we knew that would be the 1st target they would hit so we thought our families were all dead. It was some horrifying moments which I hope I'LL NEVER EXPERIENCE AGAIN.

When I heard the radio message that the USS Thresher had sunk while driving home fom Electronics Technician "B" school. My heart skipped a few beats and everything went blank for a few moments as I realized I had lost a bunch of close buddies in the 83 of the 129 men that I knew. I experienced the feelings of losing a buddy 83 times over. A very heart rending experience I hope I never have again.
