Got up one moring after a rough night of battling a storm off of South America trying to get to the Atlantic side we discovered that we lost a 5" gun plus the starboard spounate deck (if I spelled the word wrong because I could not find it in Webster), anyhow it look like a cutting torch came along and cut the deck right away from the starboard sidel

YN2 Hephern, he was going on his second tour over their and knew the R&R program inside and out.
Best Moment
My best moment when my men was alble to reach our goal of sending 10,000 sailors on R& R this includes in country R&R sites also. Bought each one a case of beer. I had 4 personel and they worked their rear end off by working 10-12 hours a day seven days a week and they work very well while I was visiting detachments informing everyone about the R&R program
Worst Moment
My worst moment when I had to recommend that PO2 Hephern be sent back to the states because he crack in a bunker one night and would not stop, I had to restrain physcial unitl I got him to the hospital. The last time I hear about him he tried to commit suicide twice at Naval Hospital. He should not have been allowed to stay extra year,.

1st Sgt with the Armed Forces Police Detachment stationed in Balitmore,Md.
Best Moment
I guess I found out what actually the Armed Force Police Attachment did. I was TAD for 3 months to the attachment in Balitmore while the ship was in drydock. Being the only single person in the Admin dept I got selected to stay behind and get the maijl everyday. Two of us lived a apartment while their and I guess we were living high off the hog until reported duty to AFD. I worked the night shift and my buddy BM3 Caldwell from Ark. worked the day shift. Are primary duty was to ride along with the local police officers and to ensure none our military personnel was properly taken care if arrested by the city police and of course our duty included Balitmore street where all the night clubs and strip joints were at.
Worst Moment
Was trying to tackle a Army private in one those night clubs and put the cuffs on him. My blues were really torn up but between the city police and my self we got him. However his crime was more serious because I could not send him back to his unit.
Best Moment

When we moved over 5000 Chinese people and animals off the isalnd called the Tachien Islands on the coast of China and transported them to Taipai and have trouble with the government their as to who was going unable as to was going to off load them off the ship. Off course the local government won but we had to watch them like hawks to insure they would not steall anything. When we attempted to enter the San Diego Harbor the Department of Heath wouild not let us in until we wash the hole ship down to pass health inspection from top to bottom. It tooks 4 days to wash the whole ship down working around 18 hours a day. There sures was a lot of wives mad when we finally arrived in the harbor, however we had to tie up in the stream and had liberty boats to take the liberty party ashore. Myself I didnt care on way or other I was still single and the only thing I wanted was a cold one. Also we had a another shipmate by the name of Moises Whitehorse who was a full French Candian Indian from either Wyo. or Mont. When he got drunk and come back to the ship,he would go down and get his chief head dress and rubber tomahaw and go up to chase the OOD around the ship would always be the young Ensign. The old man called Whitehores up to his cabain and he had to surrender his battle gear until we both transferred to Pre-Commissed School at Naval Station, San Diego to be transferred to the USS FDR 42 in Brementon, Washington and we had to train young seaman how to operate a liberty boat and both of us just knew had to operate LCVP's and LCM's 6s. What a time that was.
