Left the service and worked for LEAR near Grand Rapids Michigan. Rejoined the Navy under the CAD Program, Navy's Continuous Active Duty program for reserve officers.

On the day Coghlan was to receive his Gold Wings he was disqualified to become a naval aviator because he was 1/8th of an inch too short of the minimum requirement of five feet six inches but was granted a waiver because of the war. He was commissioned and received his wings on 12 December 1944 as Ensign Coghlan.
