Rick Meussner Wrote: There's a story about him working on the engine of an Army bird with the cowling off, when the Pilot took off with Hintzy hanging on for dear life on the engine deck.
Jack Williamson wrote: The story about John on the engine deck is true. We were on Det-3 at the same time. He was TAD to the 114th Aviation Company. I was a gunner and was down at the ready trailers when someone said, look at that and when we all looked up, there was John hanging on while the pilot put the helo through a couple of turns before he realized or believed he had a passenger. The tower was telling him to get the bird on the ground, but he didn't believe it. Rumor had it that after they pryed his hands off the transmission mount, he punched out the pilot. What I heard was that they were doing some sort of an engine check and the pilot mistook the hand signals from the ground crew and assumed it was okay to lift off. After HAL-3 we were both assigned to HC-1 and we shared an apartment in Chula Vista for about a year.

The Navy Unit Commendation may be awarded by the Secretary of the Navy to any unit of the Navy or Marine Corps that distinguishes itself by outstanding heroism in action against an enemy (but not sufficiently to justify the award of the Presidential Unit Citation). It may also be awarded to a unit that distinguishes itself by extremely meritorious service not involving combat (but in support of military operations), which renders that unit outstanding when compared to other units performing similar service.
