Retirement ceremony. Although I was not ready to retire, when I was, the CPO's and MCPO Julius Hood put on a terrific retirement ceremony for my family and I. Proudest part of this ceremony was my son was a sideboy.

I believe the defining period of my career was my assignment to the William C. Lawe (DD-763). I had requested termination of my HM-8406 NEC and assignment to Independent Duty. I was assigned to the "Willie C." without ID training/schooling. The independent duty gave me a sense of responsibility I never had before and I ran with it. I was not going to fail and I did not. Early on into the tour, I was selected as the ship's SOY and was subsequently selected as the DESRON-34 SOY. XO Connolly was the driving force behind all this.
Almost immediately after this I made Chief. It was off the last non-board cycle. Initially I was PNA'd, but out of the blue, thousands more PO1's were advanced off this cycle. I was initiated with a BT Atkins (Adkins) and was proudly accepted into the goatlocker.

The U.S. Navy's Coastal Surveillance Force operated 81 Swift boats, 24 Coast Guard WPBs, and 39 other vessels. The River Patrol Force deployed 258 patrol and minesweeping boats; the 3,700-man Riverine Assault Force counted 184 monitors, transports, and other armored craft; and Helicopter Attack Squadron Light (HAL) 3 flew 25 armed helicopters.
This air component was soon augmented by the 15 fixed-wing OV-10 Bronco aircraft of Attack Squadron Light (VAL) 4, activated in April 1969. The lethal Bronco flown by the "Black Ponies" of VAL-4 carried 8 to 16 5- inch Zuni rockets, 19 2.75-inch rockets, 4 M-60 machine guns, and a 20-millimeter cannon. In addition, five SEAL platoons supported operations in the delta.
Complementing the American naval contingent were the Vietnamese Navy's 655 ships, assault craft, patrol boats, and other vessels. To focus the allied effort on the SEALORDS campaign, COMNAVFORV appointed his deputy the operational commander, or "First SEALORD," of the newly activated Task Force 194. Although continuing to function, the Game Warden, Market Time, and Riverine Assault Force operations were scaled down and their personnel and material resources increasingly devoted to SEALORDS.
Task Force 115 PCFs mounted lightning raids into enemy- held coastal waterways and took over patrol responsibility for the delta's larger rivers. This freed the PBRs for operations along the previously uncontested smaller rivers and canals. These intrusions into former Viet Cong bastions were possible only with the on-call support of naval aircraft and the heavily armed riverine assault craft.
In the first phase of the SEALORDS campaign allied forces established patrol "barriers," often using electronic sensor devices, along the waterways paralleling the Cambodian border. In early November 1968, PBRs and riverine assault craft opened two canals between the Gulf of Siam at Rach Gia and the Bassac River at Long Xuyen. South Vietnamese paramilitary ground troops helped naval patrol units secure the transportation routes in this operational area, soon named Search Turn.
Later in the month, Swift boats, PBRs, riverine assault craft, and Vietnamese naval vessels penetrated the Giang Thanh-Vinh Te canal system and established patrols along the waterway from Ha Tien on the gulf to Chau Doc on the upper Bassac. As a symbol of the Vietnamese contribution to the combined effort, the allied command changed the name of this operation from Foul Deck to Tran Hung Dao I.
Then in December U.S. naval forces pushed up the Vam Co Dong and Vam Co Tay Rivers west of Saigon, against heavy enemy opposition, to cut infiltration routes from the "Parrot's Beak" area of Cambodia. The Giant Slingshot operation, so named for the configuration of the two rivers, severely hampered Communist resupply in the region near the capital and in the Plain of Reeds.
Completing the first phase of the SEALORDS program, in January 1969 PBRs, assault support patrol boats (ASPB), and other river craft established patrol sectors along canals westward from the Vam Co Tay to the Mekong River in Operation Barrier Reef. Description Yankee Station was a point in the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of Vietnam used by the U.S. Navy aircraft carriers of Task Force 77 to launch strikes in the Vietnam War. Carriers conducting air operations at Yankee Station were said to be "on the line" and statistical summaries were based on days on the line.
The name derived from it being the geographic reference point "Y", pronounced "Yankee" in the NATO phonetic alphabet. In turn the term Point Yankee derived from the launch point for "Yankee Team" aerial reconnaissance missions over Laos conducted in 1964. It was located about 190 km due east of Dong Hoi, at 17° 30' N and 108° 30' E.
During the two periods of sustained air operations against North Vietnam (March 2, 1965-October 31, 1968 and March 30, 1972-December 29, 1972) there were normally three carriers on the line, each conducting air operations for twelve hours, then off for twelve hours. One of the carriers would operate from noon to midnight, another from midnight to noon, and one during daylight hours, which gave 24-hour coverage plus additional effort during daylight hours, when sorties were most effective. However at the end of May, 1972, six carriers were for a short period of time on the line at Yankee Station conducting Linebacker strikes.
The first aircraft carrier at Yankee Station was USS Kitty Hawk, which was ordered there in April 1964 for the Yankee Team missions. Kitty Hawk was joined by Ticonderoga in May and Constellation in June, two months prior to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. Ticonderoga and Constellation launched the first bombing missions from Yankee Station on August 5, 1964. Constellation was also the last carrier conducting operations at Yankee Station on August 15, 1973. USS Forrestal suffered a major accident while at Yankee Station when a series of fires and explosions on her deck killed 134 men and injured another 161.
A corresponding Dixie Station in the South China Sea off the Mekong Delta was a single carrier point for conducting strikes within South Vietnam from May 15, 1965 to August 3, 1966.... More

While languishing and working for the Police Sgt in the barracks, a friend from Field Med School came to visit and asked me if I wanted to swap assignments. He was assigned to 'D' Co., 1st Bn, 2nd Marines. He was married and his wife was expecting a baby. 1/2 was scheduled for a Med float and he wanted to be home for the birth of his child. I thought it over for about 2 seconds. We ran our chits through and the swap was made. Up until that time I hated everything Green (Marine Corps). I was assigned to Weapons Platoon and once again became a 'real' corpsman. My senior HM was J. J. O'Neil. I truly enjoyed the next 8 months with 'D' Co. After the float, I was reassigned to 'C' Co., as the senior corpsman until I transferred.

Being assigned to permanent shore patrol in Golf Juan, France. 8 days of fun with some debauchery thrown in for good measure.
Also had it in Athens (Piareaus) and Barcelona . . but Golf Juan was my first (in a manner of speaking)
Worst Moment
Getting pnuemonia while on a field exercise. Was admitted to the ship's sick bay and was pretty sick for a few days. The ship's doctor (LT F. Wachter) always had a cigar in his mouth. Whilst listening to my heart (I was lying in the rack) a hot ash fell on my chest and burned me. As an involuntary reaction my hand shot up and smacked the cigar . . . got a burn on the back of my hand. But the damn doctor nearly choked on the cigar . . . and that made me feel better.

The good will of the ship's ocmpany corpsmen. They allowed us to fully integrate with them. Made for a much more enjoyable experience than on a previous float when the ships HMC wanted nothing to do with the Marine corpsman and we spent all our time in the hold.

In his speech, he warned a frightened American public that the missiles on Cuba were capable of hitting Washington, D.C. or anywhere in the southeastern portion of the country, the Panama Canal, Mexico City or “as far north as Hudson Bay, Canada, and as far south as Lima, Peru.” A military confrontation appeared imminent when Kennedy told his audience that he ordered the evacuation of the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and put military units on standby. Boldly, he stated, “one path we shall never choose is the path of surrender or submission.”
Khrushchev responded by sending additional ships—possibly carrying military cargo—toward Cuba and by allowing construction at the missile sites to continue. Over the following six days, the Cuban Missile Crisis, as it is now known, brought the world to the brink of global nuclear war while the two leaders engaged in tense negotiations via telegram and letter.
Fortunately by October 28, Kennedy and Khrushchev had reached a settlement and people on both sides of the conflict breathed a collective but wary sigh of relief. The Cuban missile sites were dismantled and, in return, Kennedy agreed to close U.S. missile sites in Turkey.... More

Best Moment
I hated my first assignment with the Marine Corps (Delta Co., 2nd Medical Bn). Dozens and dozens of HM's basically working in a warehouse. When I transferred to D Co., 1st Bn, 2nd Marines, I found myself with some true professionals. As long as I did my job, treated them with respect and did what they did, they treated me great. It was here that my love affair with the Corps truly started. Over the years I would spend over 10 years with the Marines, even going back to the 2nd Medical Bn., where I was the Company Commander of the aforementioned Delta Co., then the Command Senior Chief for the Battalion.
Worst Moment
Not sure I would call it a worst moment, but I learned what racism was first hand on this tour. Jacksonville, NC is the civilian town that is supported by Camp Lejeune. Court street was the main drag and was loaded with bars and bookstores. Mebane and I ran together on base, but he would never come out to town. When I asked him why, he told me to look around the next time I was in town and tell me how many blacks I saw in the bars. I did . . . . zero. The blacks had a side of town where they went to. I then noticed the "colored" rest rooms and drinking fountains in the bus station. Not a comfortable feeling for me.
Worst Moment
My beloved grandmother died while I was stationed here. I received an emergency Red Cross notification that she was dying. I ran an emergency leave request thru, but the XO sat on it for 12 hours, saying she wasn't immediated family. After proving to him that at one time she had been my guardian, he finally approved the chit. Unfortunately, by then I had missed a scheduled flight from the island. Got one a few hours later. When I got home I learned she had died 6 hours before I got home. I sort of hated the XO from that minute on.

My best friend Larry Rakowski (the guy I enlisted with) came in on the USS Blandy for FTG training. We got together once a week or so during his time there. One was a rather long day of beer drinking at the E club. Ended up going back and trying to get on his ship. Luckily, I was put on the bus back to my barracks. Although I didn't really like it at first, I came to enjoy my time on the rock.

I was never a good student as a civilian and Hospital Corps School was tough academically. I graduated somewhere near the middle of the class (on the bottom side).
I remember some of the watches . . . the worst was a perimeter fire guard during a blizzard. We had to walk a certain route and had this clock type thing. At each specified point, we had to key the clock. Usually a 30 minute route. I got lost, but clocked them all . . . . . took me over an hour. The COD was just sending out a couple of troops to find me when I made my way back to the office.

Larry and I had been friends since 6th grade. One day in High School (Senior) English he talked to me about the Navy Reserves. He was going down to the reserve center in Pontiac, MI the next evening to see what it was all about. My folks let me go with him. We both brought home the paperwork and our parents let us enlist in the Reserves.
Larry stayed in the Reserves for 5 or 6 years.
In 1965 I married his sister.
Larry passed away in 1989 of a cerebral hemorrhage. I miss him to this day.
Retirement ceremony. Although I was not ready to retire, when I was, the CPO's and MCPO Julius Hood put on a terrific retirement ceremony for my family and I. Proudest part of this ceremony was my son was a sideboy.
Being told that the damage to my heart was such that I could no longer continue on active duty and I was medically retired.
Assigned here for 6 months limited duty following heart attack
