The Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal is intended to provide Naval Reservists an award which is the equivalent to the Navy Good Conduct Medal.

Rescued approximately 50-70 Vietnamese "Boat People" from their adrift vessel. They had run out of fuel and food. There were several women who were pregnant. There was also a Chinese pirate ship that was closing in for the kill, until USS Kilauea came on the scene. We picked up the people, sank their dilapidated boat and took them to Singapore.

While on USS Kilawea in transit to USS Nimitz, we came upon approx. 75 Vietnamese Boat People who were dead in the water. There was a Chinese "pirate" ship lurking nearby to take advantage of these people, until they saw the US Flag. We took all of the VN Boat people onboard, cared for them, washed their clothing provided food and medical care until we reached Singapore. At that time the people were transfered off Kilawea. At the time, I was a HM2. I am proud of all my awards but this one is the one that I am most proud of. MoreHide
