The Navy Unit Commendation may be awarded by the Secretary of the Navy to any unit of the Navy or Marine Corps that distinguishes itself by outstanding heroism in action against an enemy (but not sufficiently to justify the award of the Presidential Unit Citation). It may also be awarded to a unit that distinguishes itself by extremely meritorious service not involving combat (but in support of military operations), which renders that unit outstanding when compared to other units performing similar service. WASHINGTON

NAVY UNIT COMMENDATION
to
UNITED STATES NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY, DANANG
REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
For exceptionally meritorious service from 16 August 1966 to 30 June 1970 in providing logistic support to all United States and Free World Military Assistance Forces in the critical I Corps Tactical Zone of the Republic of Vietnam. The outstandingly effective response to the increased tempo of operations in connection with the rapid buildup of forces and increased demands for material and services was most expeditiously accomplished with only a minimal increase in U.S. Naval Support Activity, Danang personnel. By superior planning and maximum effort, vast quantities of vital war materials were delivered with minimum delay to operating units throughout the I Corps Tactical Zone in the face of enemy opposition, particularly mined areas. The Station Hospital responded magnificently to the increased number of admissions due to hostile fire, as well as the growing complexity of the type and extent of injuries due to the intensification of the war in the I Corps Tactical Zone. With the initiation of the program for Accelerated Turnover of U.S. Naval Assets to the Vietnamese Navy in 1969, U.S. Naval Support Activity, Danang assumed responsibility for the transfer of logistics craft to the Vietnamese Navy and the training of hundreds of Vietnamese Navy men in public works, communications support, and boat repair and maintenance. Through foresight, initiative and perseverance in conducting an orderly transfer of common support responsibilities to the U.S. Army from January through June 1970, U.S. Naval Support Activity, Danang succeeded in accomplishing the smooth transfer of an exceedingly complex and exceptionally well-functioning operation, all without the loss of a single day of support to the operating units throughout the I Corps Tactical Zone. The highly commendable performance of duty by personnel of U.S. Naval Support Activity, Danang and subordinate units was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service

The enemy attempted another such offensive on 17-18 August but his efforts were comparatively feeble and were quickly overwhelmed by Allied forces.
In the fall of 1968 the South Vietnamese government, with major U.S. support, launched an accelerated pacification campaign. All friendly forces were coordinated and brought to bear on the enemy in every tactical area of operation. In these intensified operations, friendly units first secured a target area, then Vietnamese government units, regional forces/popular forces, police and civil authorities screened the inhabitants, seeking members of the Viet Cong infrastructure. This technique was so successful against the political apparatus that it became the basis for subsequent friendly operations. Government influence expanded into areas of the countryside previously dominated by the Viet Cong to such an extent that two years later at least some measure of government control was evident in all but a few remote regions....
