On 18 May 1972, Commander Barnett led a twenty-aircraft, coordinated air-wing attack against the heavily defended Haiphong Railroad Bridge in North Vietnam, encountering fierce opposition from enemy surface-to-air missiles. He deployed advance elements of his strike force to suppress and destroy enemy missile sites while maneuvering the main body to effectively counter the threat. Accelerating to the attack, Commander Barnett's section was again threatened by surface-to-air missiles. After hard evasive maneuvering, the target was re-acquired and attacked with precision bombing, and direct hits were scored on the bridge. His thorough efforts, employment of weapons and skillful direction of the attack resulted in the complete destruction of the target and safe return of all aircraft. By his courageous leadership and skilled airmanship, Commander Barnett reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. MoreHide
